Intense Clashes Between Hezbollah and Israel
On the 13th, Hezbollah announced that its forces had engaged in clashes with Israeli troops attempting to infiltrate the southern Lebanese border region. The fighting is reported to be ongoing.
Earlier that day, Israeli forces carried out airstrikes in the southern border area of Lebanon, resulting in the destruction of a mosque. By midday, Israel reported that two of its soldiers were seriously injured in a Hezbollah anti-tank missile attack in southern Lebanon.
On the 12th, the Israeli military stated that around 50 Hezbollah members were killed in the previous day’s clashes. Additionally, the Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that Israeli attacks on the 12th targeted three villages near Hezbollah positions, killing 15 people.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on the 13th, urged UN Secretary-General António Guterres to withdraw the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) from the southern conflict zone for their own safety. On October 10, an Israeli tank fired at a UNIFIL observation post in Naqoura, injuring two peacekeepers.
Meanwhile, the situation has seen new developments involving the U.S. and Iran. The Times of Israel reported on the 12th that a U.S. official disclosed that the Biden administration is considering deploying the THAAD missile defense system to Israel, though no formal decision has been made yet. On the same day, Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization announced that, for security reasons, passengers would be prohibited from carrying pagers and walkie-talkies on board flights.
