Syrian Ambassador to Russia Bashar Jaafari
According to reports from Russia’s TASS and Iran’s Mehr News Agency on the 5th, Syrian Ambassador to Russia Bashar Jaafari stated that Syria has officially applied to join the BRICS cooperation mechanism.
“We are very interested in joining the BRICS cooperation mechanism. We have already submitted a written application to join,” Jaafari told TASS during a break at the conference titled “The North Caucasus: New Geostrategic Opportunities.”
It is understood that Russia holds the rotating BRICS presidency this year. The BRICS cooperation began in 2006 when the foreign ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, and China met for the first time. In response to the financial crisis, the leaders of the four countries held their first summit in Russia in June 2009, officially launching the BRICS cooperation mechanism. In December 2010, based on mutual agreement, South Africa was formally admitted into the group.
In January of this year, with the addition of new members, the BRICS group expanded to 10 countries, and the waiting list for membership continues to grow. After the expansion, BRICS nations now account for nearly half of the world’s population and one-fifth of global trade, becoming a crucial force in promoting a multipolar world.
