On October 9, a beach in Thailand was invaded by thousands of strange, transparent, needle-like creatures. Most of the popular Khao Kaloke Beach in Pranburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, was covered by these marine animals, whose identity has yet to be officially confirmed. The invasion scared away tourists and left locals baffled.
Photos of the peculiar creatures spread along a 5-kilometer stretch from the Pranburi River mouth and quickly went viral on social media, prompting discussions among marine experts. Many speculate that these creatures could be part of the Creseis species, a type of pteropod sea snail.
The last time this species made the news was in 2021, when they invaded Ban Krut Beach, just a short distance from local hotels. Environmental volunteer Prosin Sihaseni mentioned that this unsettling sight even left residents in the area puzzled.
“A fisherman told me he hadn’t seen anything like this in decades,” said kite surfer Noey Varinya, whose video of her carefully removing the creatures from her wetsuit after a training session went viral online. “They’re floating in the water too.”
Concerns have been raised about the potential danger these creatures pose, especially to children. “Parents need to be vigilant,” advised kite surfing coach Atthawut Trinai. “These needle-like creatures can pierce the skin. It’s best to stay out of the water until they disappear.” As experts continue to investigate the sudden appearance of these creatures, beachgoers are being urged to exercise caution, with many preferring to stay away from the water for now.
